Brijuni Islands up for Sale?
According to an Article in the Trieste newspaper “Il Piccolo” and a later articled in “The Independent” the Croatia Island group Brijuni, situated west of the Istrian peninsula, is for sale, the price for all 14 island should be 2.5 billion Euro, for the main island Veli Brijuni, should have a price tag of 1.2 billion Euro.
The owner of the National park Brijuni is the Croatian State, who denies that the islands are up for sale. According to the media, the government should be in an urgent need for cash, so they apparently should be thinking about selling several state assets, Accordingly Brijuni should be on a short list together with the national energy Company HEP.
A Challenge for investors:
According to experts, a sale of the Brijuni Islands (Brijuni National park) would be complicated, If a potential investor would like to use the island for tourism in a large scale, they would have to build new Infrastructure, this is although not possible as long as the island are protected as a national park, so according to a anonymous Zagreb lawyer it would be necessary, to reverse the national park status of the Brijuni Islands, even in times of Crises, this would not be accepted well by the Croatian public.
It could be serious:
Apparently investors from the tourist industry are already aware about a potential sale of the Brijuni islands, Gustav Wurmböck, co-owner of the Wiener Epic and the tourism company Valamar in Croatia, stated that they already bought, land areas on the Istrien main land opposite to the Brijuni Islands.
Brijuni used to be privately owned:
The main part of the 14 Islands was sold to the Industrial magnet Paul Kuppelweiser back in 1893, Kuppelweiser turned the island in to a hot spot for the European Elite, and later the island became the preferred summer residence for President Tito, who spend up to 6 month a year on the islands.
