Croatia | E-commerce account for 14% of enterprises turnover

This morning I received a mail with the Headline “E-commerce turnover of enterprises in EU27 plus Croatia and Norway”, as soon as I saw the words internet and E-commerce I of course had to read this report. The report had some very interesting, and initially for me hard to believe numbers in the conclusion.

In relation to the internet usage of Enterprises Croatia, the report states that 95% of all enterprises in Croatia have internet access, and 72% are even having a Broadband connection, considering that the report only covers companies’ larger then 10 employees, these seams like realistic numbers. The highest coverage was in Finland where 100% of the enterprises larger then 10 employees have internet and 94% having a Broadband connection.

The really tricky number in the report was the numbers in relation to E-commerce. According to the report 14% of the turnover of Croatian companies’ larger then 10 employees comes from E-commerce? My first reaction was being speechless, the second was to consult my colleagues, who then got speechless. We as a group then tried to think about some companies selling online, only one crossing our mind was Konsum, who does a bit of online trading – Konsum, but most properly the revenue from E-commerce is still below 0.5 % of there total revenue?

So where does these 14% come from?

Well we managed to find a note which might explain the number, in the notes, E-commerce is defined like this “E-commerce means purchases and sales made via websites or via automated data exchange, but excluding normal e-mail messages that are manually typed.”

If the automated exchange also means, that Stock trading on the Crobex is included in the E-commerce number, then the number sounds reasonable. My personal guess would be that the actual E-commerce, in the meaning of buying and selling regular products and services online, would be less then 0.3% of the total enterprise revenues.

Anyway this is good example how a head line can catch your attention.
