Croatia wants to join EU in 2011
Upon the new Lisbon treaty, which has entered into force here on the first of December, the Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, has criticises Brussels for plans which could make Croatia’s way info to the EU, depending on the development in other countries in the Balkan region.
“A country should be able to enter into the EU, when it fulfils the criteria’s” Mesic told the German newspaper the Handelsblatt. Mesic hopes that Croatia would be ready to join the EU in 2011, but do to the recent positive development in Serbia, Brussels is now considering to wait with the “Balkan” EU extension till more countries in the region can join at the same time.
Mesic warned “A slow country should not be delaying a fast country in entering the EU”. Serbia, the largest country on West Balkan, hopes to join the EU in 2014, till then end of 2009 Serbia will send its application to Brussels. President Boric Tadic has ensured that his government would do everything possible to implement the temporary trade agreement with the EU.
For Croatia a decision of making a bulk EU expansion in the Balkan area, could be a touch punishment for the slow improvements in the years 2007 and 2008, especially in relation to corruptions and the legal system. The past month has although brought quite a few positive stories in relation to corruption, 6 major scandals like the Spice affair (Podravka affair), the HEP affair and lately the affair related to the Croatian motorway company HAC, has let to the arrest of a number of high profiled managers and politicians.

Without question Croatia should enter the EU as soon as all chapters have been opened/closed.
Not in the first place of high importance to Croatia’s political and economical development, but a pertinent MUST DO to keep the Central European area from collapsing or turning to less wanted partners.
The country technically speaking is not ready for Europe (sorry to say), but it’s absolutely the best for the EU to be connected to the reforms leading to a balanced status, both political and economic.
And let’s not forget that it would add the most beautifull new member to the list of EU-member-states, in the sense of natural beauty at the Adriatic.
Pozdrav, P.
Lets see how it goes with the EU membership, i think lately after Kosor took over, Croatia has made some progress, but there is still long way to go.

It would be good for both parties. For the EU, as croatia is an important country and even holiday target and for croatia as well, to get more together with the nation enclosed, like slovenia and further austria.
Hi Tom, here people have diversified opinion about EU or no EU, i think the politicians decide it has to be, so lets see if the succeed
