Split Oktoberfest 2009 – a total success
As I heard about the planned Oktoberfest in Split last week, I thought that is not going to work? But I most say I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Yesterday my family, I and a few other expats, decided to go and see how the Oktoberfest was celebrated here in Split, it turned out to be a bomb of a Party. As we parked our cars by Bacvice at 8.30 PM, we could already hear the German Orchestra playing real “Oktoberfest” music. At the tent we manage to get the last available seats.
The Bavarian band was excellent in creating the right atmosphere, although we where more less the only people who understood German, everybody was singing along to the traditional Oktoberfest songs like “Heidi” and “Kreuzberger Nächte”. At around 9.30 PM a couple of the other German Expat from Split joined us, so we ended up have really party at our table, it really took of when we where joined by a American group on a one day visit in Split.
In addition to the Bavarian group, a local band played some great music like YMCA and ABBA classic, they really kick started the dancing, only drawback from a music point of view was a girls choir from Kastala singing folklore music, that was a real party killer, luckily the only performed a few songs.
Food and Drinks
Of course the beer served was a Bavarian beer – Kaltenberg, beers was served in ½ liter and the traditional Oktoberfest “mass” a 1 litre beer mug. Real Bavarian food like sourkraut and sussages made the Oktoberfest feeling complete.
Prices where absolutely ok, ½ litre of beer or on portion of food was 12 kuna (1.60 Euro), I think the price for similar stuff is around 6 Euro at the Oktoberfest in Munich.
As we left the party around 1.30 AM, tents was packed with around 500 – 600 people, so no doubt that the first Oktoberfest in Split was a real success story, we for sure are going to be there next year also.

October fest was great, but I don’t think i was related to the close relation with Austria/Hungary, I more thing that the past 30 years where lots of people from Croatia went to Germany to work, have made the Germany culture most stronger in the area.
the 2011 Oktoberfest will be held in March, this year if was put in November to celebrated the 20 anniversary of the German reunion.
