Zagreb Major announces his candidacy for President of Croatia

Submitted by Croatiablognews on November 9, 2009 – 10:03 pmOne Comment

Milan_BandicLast week the mayor of Zagreb Milan Bandic announced his candidacy for President of the Republic Croatia.  The announcement of his candidacy was done In a little bit unusual way, he had invited journalists to a press conference at the Sljeme (mountain above Zagreb).

Bandicwas until then a member of SDP (Social Democratic Party), but as his party already has president candidate, he excluded himself from the party as he announced his candidacy. In general it is not unusual that a major from a large city like Zagreb, would like to join in the race for next Croatian president, but in Bandic case it is a bit surprising, as Bandic has been involved in numerous scandals.

His main affair / scandal, and probably a scandal which every Croat still will remember was in 2002, Milan Bandic was caught drunk driving, and he tried to escape from the police. When the policeman finally stopped him he tried to bribe them, which the policeman refused. Outcome of the case was that the policeman was suspended because he told reporters what happened. Bandic was forced to resign after this affair.

But already back in 1996 he was involved in some interesting stuff. That year Milan Bandic divorced his wife Vesna, after which she, purchased at a cheap apartment in Preradoviceva in downtown Zagreb. The law on compensation for property, seized during the Yugoslav communist rule, allowed a privileged purchase for people without real-estate. This kind of purchase was possible only until March 1997th, the interesting part in relation to Bandi? and his ex-wife, was that she already a week after the divorce applied to buy flat of 38 square meters in Preradovceva for a price of 35,760 kuna! (5000 euro), at that time Milan Bandic already owned a flat in Bužanova street, so only do to the divorce Vesna Bandic was able to purchase the privileged apartment.

Well what is strange in this case?

Milan Bandic today lives happily in the apartment Bužanova street, together with his former wife, former ex-wife and current wife which is one and the same person – Vesna Bandic

Bandic’s biography is full of controversies and scandals during his mandate as the first man of Zagreb. Journalists are saying all the time that Bandic is populist, he is always saying what the public like to hear. Probably the journalist was right, as with each new affair he became stronger.

One of the best comments that could be read in the press is from author Tomislav Klašuski who wrote a story with the following title: “The ninth circle of hell: Bandic President, Prime Minister Sanader, Kerum and Mamic – mayors”.
